About Andropause

Andropause, also known as “male menopause,” is the period of a man’s life when he stops producing enough testosterone to maintain an adequate hormonal balance. During late adulthood, men begin losing about 1% of their testosterone every year. (1) This is a natural aspect of aging, but it can cause some uncomfortable symptoms if it becomes excessive.

Testosterone is an important hormone for male bodies, as it contributes to sexual characteristics, mental health, and physical function. A reduction in these natural masculine characteristics can lead to a general decline in one’s quality of life. Unlike menopause in women, andropause is a looser concept that can be characterized by a variety of symptoms. These include:

  • Mood swings
  • Irritability
  • Low libido or sex drive
  • Loss of muscle mass and strength
  • Lack of energy
  • Feelings of fatigue
  • Thinning and balding hair
  • Loss of memory and concentration skills
  • Decreasing bone density
  • Slower hair growth

These symptoms can be caused by lack of sleep, an unhealthy diet, a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, depression, anxiety, and stress. For this reason, it is important that patients attempt to lead a healthy lifestyle before they decide to undergo BHRT. At the initial consultation, Dr. Rajguru can create a complex analysis of patients’ hormones to determine if low testosterone is the cause of their problems.

Benefits of BHRT

BHRT is a treatment that utilizes bioidentical hormones to re-establish balance within the body. “Bioidentical” means that the hormones that Dr. Rajguru uses are structurally identical to the hormones that the body naturally produces. This reduces the risk of adverse reactions or complications and increases the chances that the patient’s body will accept and benefit from the treatment in comparison to alternative hormone options. Balancing your hormones with andropause treatment at Evolved Medical comes with many great benefits that can reduce your symptoms and improve your well-being. These include:

  • Enhancements in mental function
  • Increased libido and ability to get erections
  • Boosted energy
  • More stable and positive moods
  • Greater strength and ability to build muscle

What Is Hormone Pellet Therapy?

BHRT Hormone Pellet Therapy is a convenient and efficient means of receiving treatment. It involves the insertion of small pellets about the size of a grain of rice, made up of a hormonal formula that is customized based on each patient’s unique needs. Once placed under the skin, the pellets release a steady flow of hormones for several months to avoid the need for multiple doctor’s office visits.

Who is a Candidate for BHRT?

If you have noticed that your quality of life is decreasing as the years go by, BHRT might be the perfect way to get back on track. It can also work as a preventative measure if you want to make sure that your testosterone levels stay balanced well into adulthood. We typically recommend that men be over the age of 35 to undergo this treatment. If you have a history or are at risk for blood clots, high cholesterol, liver disease, or gallbladder issues, BHRT may not be a safe option. You should be in relatively good health to be eligible, as this will increase the likelihood that your treatment is successful.

Preparation

There is no explicit preparation protocol for BHRT, but there are some things you can do to help us provide the best possible care. Try to maintain a consistent lifestyle from the time of your consultation through to the end of your treatment. This will help us keep your treatment efficient. Eating a healthy diet and engaging in an active lifestyle throughout your treatment period will also make your treatment more effective.

BHRT Procedure

The details of your BHRT procedure will depend on the method of hormone administration.  For injections, we will teach you how to safely administer injections to yourself at home. If you are receiving testosterone through pellets, we will begin your procedure by giving you a local anesthetic on your treatment area to prevent discomfort. Once you are numb, Dr. Rajguru will make a small incision and place the pellet underneath your skin. The pellet will release testosterone steadily for the duration of your treatment period. Regardless of your treatment method, you will need to return periodically so that he can measure your hormonal levels and assess your progress.

Recovery

BHRT requires no downtime for recovery. Feel free to resume everyday activity as soon as your procedure sessions are over. However, avoiding strenuous activity in the days following your procedures will help your body adjust to the new testosterone. You may experience redness, bruising, and sensitivity in your injection or incision sites. These symptoms are common, and they should go away by themselves. If they become bothersome, you can take an over-the-counter medication like Tylenol to help.

Results

You may feel a reduction in low T symptoms as early as a few days after your initial treatment. However, most patients do not feel an improvement in their well-being until 1-3 weeks after starting pellet therapy. The rate at which your hormones become balanced will depend on your method of treatment and your body’s ability to metabolize testosterone. Your results will gradually improve, and you will notice an increase in energy, libido, and mental clarity.

How Much Does BHRT Cost in Walnut Creek?

The total cost of your andropause treatment will depend on your particular hormonal balance, the administration method, and the number of sessions that you require with Dr. Rajguru. We can discuss the cost of your treatment and other important topics at your personal consultation. FAQ

Are there any side effects of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy?

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy should be administered by doctors who are experienced in hormonal medicine. With proper patient care and screening, most side effects can be avoided. The use of bioidentical hormones will also reduce the chances of inconvenient symptoms. Some common side effects include oily skin, acne, increased body hair and scalp hair loss.

What are bioidentical hormones?

Bioidentical hormones are well-suited to hormone replacement therapy because they are molecularly identical to hormones that occur naturally within the human body (hence “bio”-identical). The body will process these in the exact same way that it would process the hormones that it produces itself.

How do I know if I am going through andropause?

Andropause does not have any concrete symptomatic definitions. Rather, it relates to the negative effects of testosterone loss as men grow older. If you are feeling a reduction in your well-being, such as low libido, low energy, and mood swings, these symptoms may be the result of low T. You will need to receive a medical assessment of your hormone levels before you can determine if your symptoms are the result of andropause.

How does bioidentical hormone replacement therapy help men going through andropause?

If you are going through andropause, the cause of your symptoms is low levels of testosterone. By reintroducing safe and effective bioidentical testosterone into your body, BHRT can alleviate your symptoms at their source.
