The views are spectacular and the wide, 1-mile path will get you comfortable walking in the woods. Look up and feel dwarfed by the majestic giant redwoods. When you are ready, graduate to the River Trail, where you can complement hiking with a dip in a cool stream. You can’t miss West Cliff Drive, a six-mile walk along the Pacific. Start this trek at the Santa Cruz Dream Inn. This “hike” is appropriate for all ages and fitness levels, so take the entire family.

      If you’re in Lafayette, park on Via Granada to hike the Moraga Road to Reservoir Rim Trail. It’s a little less than half a mile long, with a pleasant grade and a final, steep hill with awesome views to reward your effort. The Hidden Oaks Trail off Condit Road is a flat, mile-long route that leads you to a scenic grove. It’s so beautiful, you forget you are exercising.

      In Monterrey, head to Pinnacles National Park to explore caves and rock formations. And you can’t miss Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park and Pfeiffer Falls Trail within it. The waterfall is magnificent.

      You have to visit the Archery Fire Road Trail in Huddart Park if you are in San Mateo. Redwoods and Douglas firs abound. When you are ready for something new, try Devil’s Slide Trail; the name may be intimidating, but the ocean views make it worth it. It’s a paved trail with a separate lane for cyclists.
