Women undergo hormonal changes throughout their lives, from the onset of puberty to perimenopause, menopause and beyond. Pregnancies also cause some of the most dramatic changes your body will ever experience. Maintaining optimum hormonal levels during these natural life stages can enhance your health and improve your quality of life at every age.

A common hormonal problem for women in their 30’s and 40’s is Pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS).

Pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS) often precedes menstruation by three to twelve days, and can cause a variety of symptoms including the following:

Physical symptoms

  • Weight gain
  • Lack of energy
  • Headaches/Migraines
  • Cramps, muscle and joint pain, back pain
  • Swelling and tenderness of the breasts
  • Decreased libido
  • Infertility

Mood and behavior symptoms

  • Sadness or depression
  • Anger, irritability, aggression
  • Anxiety
  • Mood swings
  • Decreased alertness, trouble concentrating
  • Withdrawal from family and friends

At its worst, PMS can progress to a more serious condition: Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, or PMDD. Symptoms of PMDD are often the same as those of PMS but are more severe and can sometimes become intense enough to interfere with your everyday life.

Perimenopause and Menopause

Perimenopause literally translates to “around menopause”.    Perimenopause refers to the time when a woman’s body makes a natural transition towards the menopausal stage where she becomes infertile.    Women typically experience perimenopause in their mid to late 40’s.    This is characterized by symptoms of irregular periods, longer or shorter menses, and completely missed cycles that progress to where a woman can ceases to have any periods all together (menopause).

While many experience mild symptoms or none at all, some women may experience any or all of the following:

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Sleep problems
  • Mood changes
  • Weight gain/slowed metabolism
  • Thinning hair and dry skin
  • Loss of breast fullness
  • Changes in libido

While some of these symptoms might require medical intervention, including hormone replacement therapy and a variety of medications, many of them can be managed through lifestyle adjustments, including changes to exercise and diet.
